Our Oil Spill Consultancy Capabilities
We deliver a number of Marine Protection consultancy and modelling intelligence services for oil spill incidents:
Preparation
Riskaware can conduct pre-emptive incident risk assessments to help you prepare effective response strategies for possible marine threats, like tanker oil spills, in advance. Using our incident models, we can provide forecasts showing the evolution of a potential oil spill, highlighting the likely outcomes and areas most likely to be severely impacted.
This initial evaluation supports valuable readiness planning whereby users can ensure the most suitable procedures and equipment are in place for a worst-case scenario event. Our consultants can also provide training and customisation services for our MarineAware solution, which can integrate with detection systems to provide continuous monitoring of a specific area.
Response
Riskaware can provide professional consultancy during ongoing incidents to support organisations with their real-time response. We work with a range of data providers to ensure we have global coverage and that our models are always ready to support the outbreak of a new incident, plus adapt as events change during an ongoing response.
Investigation
Under the MARPOL convention it is illegal not to report spillages at sea. If an unreported oil spill does occur, our consultants can use MarineAware’s source estimation capability to identify the possible origin of the oil. Through the latest machine learning techniques, we can cross-reference the estimated source location with AIS data to highlight vessels which could be responsible. This is both a powerful investigative tool and a deterrent to those who may deliberately cause oil spills through actions like illegal bilge pumping.
Validation
To ensure our models give the most accurate results possible, Riskaware, in conjunction with our partners at the Science and Technologies Facilities Council (STFC), has developed a set of leading, innovative metrics for validating oil spill models.
These metrics have been used extensively to validate our own oil spill models, with STFC acting as an independent assessor. Through our Marine consultancy service, we can also use these established metrics to provide an objective and quantifiable assessment of other models.
Comprehensive Marine Protection Consultancy
Riskaware can further provide responsive modelling solutions to give actionable intelligence for a number of different marine incidents and environments. Some of our other fields of consultancy include:
- Algae blooms
- Marine plastic
- Icebergs
- River water quality monitoring
- Marine search and rescue
- Tsunamis
Explore our MarineAware Solution
MarineAware helps to assess and respond to oil spills in the ocean to help safeguard marine life and vulnerable coastlines. It also models the potential risk associated with seaborne transport of hazardous substances.
Projects & Partners
The consultancy service we run was initiated to aid global organisations in their incident response, inspired by projects led by Satellite Applications Catapult (SAC) and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). Our marine incident models have been assessed and validated against many real-world incidents, by the Science and Technologies Facilities Council (STFC).
We have worked with various organisations involved in environmental incident response, including clean-up agencies, government bodies, and independent enterprises, and can customise our models or approach based on your needs.
Some examples of our consultancy projects include:
- FSO SAFER for SAC and FCDO: Riskaware provided simulations of potential outcomes and risks surrounding the neglected storage vessel, the results of which were used widely, including by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), United Nations (UN), and US Secretary of State.
- EASOS Marine Watch: Led by SAC, Riskaware, alongside Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), consulted with Malaysian Authorities to create a bespoke system for helping them address pollution from oil spills in their waters.
The EASOS Marine Watch system
In this case study we outline how Riskaware played an instrumental part in the successful response by Malaysian Authorities to contain an oil spill off the coast of Johor, highlighting how the system was used in the detection, investigation and containment of the slick.

Modelling the risk from the FSO SAFER
In this case study, we outline how Riskaware has been providing modelling support to the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) by carrying out investigations into the risks posed by the FSO SAFER oil tanker.
